The Oak Inside the Acorn

By Max Lucado

Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young,

but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.

1 Timothy 4:12

In this series, children will discover that one of the ways Jesus showed people that he is God was through miracles. Children will learn a few of the amazing miracles that Jesus performed while he was here on earth, and that Jesus did these things out of his great love for people.

“All things are possible with God.”

Mark 10:27

Jesus heals a man who can't walk

Luke 5:17-25

What is a miracle?

Explain to your kids that a miracle is something that seems impossible. We could never do it—but God can!

Today’s story from the Bible has a miracle in it.

Kids and Jr. High Series - MIRACLES

Jesus showed us that he really is God’s Son through his teaching, great love, and miracles. His miracles weren't just for a good show, but to pour his love and compassion on those who really needed it most. There was love and meaning wrapped in to each one. In this series, students will learn through the miracles of Jesus and see his immense love for people.

God is the Father who gives tender love. All comfort comes from him.

2 Corinthians 1:3

Kids (K - Gr. 3)

Has anyone ever helped you when you were hurt? What happened? How did they help?

Have you ever helped someone who was hurt? How did you help?

In today’s God Story, the friends of a man who is paralyzed carry him to Jesus. Then something amazing happens!

Do you know what it means to be paralyzed?

Explain that paralysis is the loss of muscle function in part of the body. It happens when something goes wrong with the way messages pass between the brain and muscles. It can occur in just one area, or it can be widespread.

When the man’s friends carried him to Jesus, they shared in his problem.

What does it mean to make someone else’s problems our own?

Can you think of any examples?

What are some ways we could share God’s love with other people, especially when they’re hurting?

Read Luke 5:17-26

The story of Jesus healing the man who could not walk.

Has anyone ever helped you when you were hurt? What happened? How did they help?

Have you ever helped someone who was hurt? How did you help?

Think about the video...

How did the man’s friends help him? (they carried him on a mat to Jesus)

Why did they lower the man through the roof? (a crowd was blocking the way to Jesus)

Whose faith got Jesus’ attention? (the friends)

What did Jesus do because of their faith? (healed the man)

Why could Jesus forgive sins and heal people? (Jesus is God)

We can share God’s love by helping those who are hurting.

Junior High (Gr.4-6)

Has anyone ever done something for you that made you feel particularly special, loved, or cared for? What was it?

Think about the video...

Do you think the friends from today’s God Story were old or new friends?

Why do you think this group chose not to give up when their task seemed almost impossible?

How does your love for other people affect your willingness to help or serve them?

We can share God’s love by helping those who are hurting.

Read Luke 5:20-24

Notice that the first thing Jesus did was forgive the man’s sins.

Why do you think Jesus did this when the friends wanted him to heal the man’s legs?

Jesus sees forgiveness as a more valuable gift than miraculous healing!

Some people need physical healing or materials like food, clothing, or shelter. People who are hurting often need other things, too.

What are some ways we can share God’s love by helping those who are hurting?

e.g., showing hope; praying for them; being encouraging; just “being there”

If God most dearly loves those who are hurting, struggling, or suffering, how might that influence the way we interact with others?

Think of 5 people in your life.

Ask Jesus to show you what you can do to share His love.

Youth Series - SON OF GOD

Jesus showed us that he is the Son of God through miracles. They weren’t just good for a show! Jesus poured his compassion, healing, and love on those who needed it most.

God is the Father who gives tender love. All comfort comes from him. He comforts us in all our troubles. Now we can comfort others when they are in trouble.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NIRV)

Youth (Gr. 7-9)

Have you ever been hurt emotionally instead of physically? (e.g., a relative died, someone you loved was really sick, etc.)

Who helped you? How did they help you?

Read Luke 5:17-26

Think about the men who carried their friend and the effort they made to get him to Jesus.

Have you ever made a huge effort for a friend? Why or why not?

What might have happened to the man if his friends didn’t help him?

Think about those in your family, at school, or in your neighbourhood who are hurting physically or emotionally.

Who came to mind? What could you do to help them?

What could happen to them if no one is willing to help?

Read 1 Peter 3:13-17

What does this passage mean?

What does it look like for you at school? At home? With your friends? When it comes to helping those who are hurting?

How would you answer someone who asks you why you’re helping someone else?

Have you ever experienced God’s love through someone else’s kindness and help?

How did it feel to experience God’s love in this way?

Notice that the friends in today’s God Story did something very practical. It was Jesus who then performed the miracle!

Sometimes, we don’t know how to help others, especially when someone is hurting emotionally.

Brainstorm some ideas for how to help others who are hurting (e.g., be a good friend, hang out together, pray for them, etc.).

Do you know someone who’s hurting?

What can you do to help?
