Kids, Jr. High and Youth Series - HEARING GOD

Welcome to the series “Luke | Hearing God” where we will look at the Christmas story and the prophecies of Isaiah hundreds of years before. This series focuses in on what it means to listen to God. During this series, students will discover why and how we listen to God. Students will be given the opportunity to take some time to listen to God, and they will be challenged to try out different ways to really experience Him.

I will listen to what God the Lord says. He promises peace to his faithful people.

Psalm 85:8a

Kids (K - Gr. 3)

What do you want to be when you grow up?

What do you think God wants you to do when you grow up?

Do you think he cares?

What do you think your purpose is right now?

When we listen to God, we learn our purpose.

Read about Mary in Luke 1:5-56

In today’s God Story, who listened to God?

What was Mary’s purpose?

What was Jesus’ purpose while he was on earth? (to save us from sin, show us God’s love, and set up his kingdom)

Christmas is all about celebrating Jesus!

Do you think God has a special purpose for you?

If so, what do you think it might be?

How are you listening to God to find out?

What do you think your purpose is at home? At school? With your friends?

Prayer...

It is importance to listen to God!

We each have a special purpose, just like the people from today’s God and Life Stories.

Ask God to help you to listen to him, learn your purpose, and live it out.

Junior High (Gr.4-6)

What do you want to be when you’re an adult?

What do you think God wants you to do or be when you’re older?

What do you think having a purpose means?

Could you have more than one purpose?

What's the Purpose?

Challenge another person with these questions!

What is the purpose of a camera?

What is the purpose of a book?

What is the purpose of glue?

What is the purpose of a pen?

What is the purpose of a teacher?

What is the purpose of deodorant?

What is the purpose of a car?

What is the purpose of a colouring book?

What is the purpose of a key?

What is the purpose of clothing?

What is the Bible’s purpose? (to tell God’s story)

Read Luke 1:38

God chose Mary to be the mother of Jesus because she was willing to live a life of loving and serving. After the angel Gabriel told her that God had chosen her, she replied with something amazing!

How would you respond to God asking you to do something for him?

Are you ready for a life of loving and serving?

Read Philippians 1:27

Sometimes we can get so wrapped up in trying to find God's purpose for us that it causes us to be anxious or worry. That's not necessary! God's purpose, his plan, his hope for us is that we follow Jesus, love and serve God and others, and always remember who we are as his children.

How are you living as a citizen of heaven?

When do you need help remembering who you are as his child?

When do you need his help to love and serve people who you may not want to love and serve?

Read Romans 12:9-18

Our main purpose is to love. God wants us to love the broken, the hurt, the unloveable, and the lost. He wants us to love like Jesus.

What part of the verse stands out to you?

What do you feel challenged by in reading this?

What does God want to say to you?

When we listen to God, we learn our purpose.

Youth (Gr. 7-9)

Is there an item that you feel is kind of pointless (e.g., something that’s obsolete because of newer technology)?

Most things have at least one purpose. It might be one-time or ongoing. What are some examples of things that have multiple purposes?

We can have multiple purposes in life.

When we listen to God, we learn our purpose.

Can you think of anyone in the Bible who had a specific purpose at a certain time (e.g., Esther, David, etc.)?

Do you think we still have specific purposes like these examples or is it different now?

It may seem as if having a baby is a pretty normal thing, however, Mary's purpose was to be the mother of Jesus, which is a whole other ball game!

Read Luke1:38

Is there anything in your own life that you could look at from the perspective of "I am the Lord's servant," and allow it to change your attitude?

If our purpose is to love God and our neighbour, what might that look like?

At home? At school? Online? With your friends?

We may never get to a place where they feel "this is my specific purpose from God" and that's okay!

We all share the purpose to love God and love others. As we listen to God and get to know Jesus better, we learn what this looks like in our everyday lives.

How is your purpose to love being lived out?

Are there situations or relationships in which it’s difficult for you to love right now?

How is your purpose to love being held back?
