Kids, Jr. High and Youth Series - HEARING GOD

Welcome to the series “Luke | Hearing God” where we will look at the Christmas story and the prophecies of Isaiah hundreds of years before. This series focuses in on what it means to listen to God. During this series, students will discover why and how we listen to God. Students will be given the opportunity to take some time to listen to God, and they will be challenged to try out different ways to really experience Him.

I will listen to what God the Lord says. He promises peace to his faithful people.

Psalm 85:8a

Kids (K - Gr. 3)

Whom do you listen to the most?

Do you ever hear them speaking—but you’re not really listening to what they’re saying? (e.g., you’re watching TV and a parent asks you to do something, but you ignore them)

Have you ever been asked to do something (e.g., clean your room or do your homework), but you did not do it? Why didn’t you do it?

Prophets in the Old Testament were the people who heard from God. Today, we can hear from God, too!

When we follow Jesus, we have the Holy Spirit in our lives, and the Holy Spirit “speaks” to us in a variety of ways.

How do you think God speaks to us?

(e.g., through other people; through an inner voice; through life events; through the Bible; in prayer)

Question Time

Today’s God Story was about a prophet named

A. Isaac; B. Isaiah; C. Ezekiel

A prophet is someone who

A. makes a lot of money; B. does all kinds of miracles; C. speaks on behalf of God

Isaiah’s job was difficult when people didn’t

A. listen; B. pay him; C. know him

“Immanuel” means

A. God is awesome; B. God with us; C. God rocks

Isaiah prophesied about

A. Jesus’ birth; B. Jesus’ death; C. both Jesus’ birth and death

Today’s Big Idea is: When we listen to God

A. he shouts; B. we hear from him; C. he asks us to write things down

A Listening Prayer.

Have you ever been quiet and listened for God before?

Sit quietly and close your eyes.

Pray, “God, thank you that when I listen to you, I hear from you. Help me to hear from you.”

When we listen to God, we hear from him.

Junior High (Gr.4-6)

Which person do you listen to the most?

Do you ever hear but not really listen to what they say?

Rate your listening!

Use their fingers to show their answers on a scale of 1 (not at all) to 10 (definitely).

How well do you listen to your teachers?

How well do you feel they listen to you?

How well do you listen to your parents?

How well do you listen to your best friend?

How well do you feel they listen to you?

When we listen to God, we hear from him.

Be Open

Before beginning to listen quietly, take a moment to share with God how you feel about the fact that he wants to speak to you.

Pray silently.

Be honest with God. This is between you and Him.

Be Ready

In John 10:27, Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me.”

When has a Bible verse, or something that someone else said to you about God, or an experience you have had in worship really stuck with you?

What was it like to feel a nudge or inner whisper from God?

What did you do?

Be Still

This isn’t a formula. There is not just one way to do this. This is just a best attempt to help you be still before God.

Close your eyes. Take a deep breath.

Try not to be distracted by things around you.

Ask God to speak to your heart. Try to focus on Him.

Breathe.

Pray.

Thank Him.

If you want to open your Bible, do it.

What does God want you to hear?

Youth (Gr. 7-9)

What do you think it would be like to hear a message directly from God? What would you do?

What if you had to tell something to someone who didn’t want to hear it—would you do it?

What do you think it would be like to be known as THE person God sends messages through? What would that be like for you at school?

When we listen to God, we hear from him.

Jesus is God with us, we can trust that Jesus’ words are the words of God.

When we read what Jesus says in the Bible, we can learn so much about what matters to God.

Isaiah 7:14

What do you think this message means?

Have you heard the name Immanuel before?

Matthew 1:18-25.

What do you notice in this passage?

Why do you think verse 23 is important?

What does it mean to you that when Jesus came, he was literally GOD WITH US?

Quiet Time with Jesus

Have you ever taken some time to be quiet with God?

(It’s like meditating but focusing on God.)

If yes, what was that experience like?

If not, is it something you’d try? Why or why not?

Do you think God might have something to say to you?

If you were to guess, what do you think it may be?

Do you have a favourite teaching of Jesus or something about his life that you love?

What does it say about who God is?

What does this aspect of Jesus mean to you?
